Known for their oranges with a story that dates back to the 17th century, the country is also well known for the Portuguese Gold Coins. They’ve produced these coins denominated in reis, cruzados, escudos, dobra, and peca. It’s known to gold coin collectors that s piece of these gold coins can amount to as much as $3,000 in the market.

Portuguese Gold Coins have a denomination of 100 Escudos. These coins have a diameter of 34 millimeters. It weighs 24 grams with an alloy rate of 0.9166, as well as gold content of 0.7000.

Other countries prefer to pay tribute to their monarchs or leaders who helped shape their heritage. With Portugal, take the example of the 100 Escudos minted in 1987 in which they have highlighted the Discovery Series, Diogo Cao 1486. This was the time when Portuguese navigators led the discovery of new lands. This happened even before the birth of Christopher Columbus.

Apart from the 1987 100 Escudos, another set of Portuguese Gold Coins appeared in 1989. Still carrying the same denomination and other important specifications, this gold coin highlighted Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias’ discovery Cabo da Boa in 1948.
