The Aztec Empire was known for its gold for the reason that it was the color of the sun, one of their great gods. They used gold in their artwork to symbolize their sun god. However, they didn't make coins out of that gold. That wasn't started until after the Spanish conquered the Aztec Empire.
Mexico was to remain under Spanish rule for almost three centuries and during that time, Spanish style gold coins were made in Mexico. Mexico declared its independence from Spanish rule in 1810, but no new gold coins were introduced until 1864 when currency was changed into the form of the peso.
These days, seven types of Mexican gold coins are available for collectors. These are: 1 Peso, 2 Pesos, 2.5 Pesos, 5 Pesos, 10 Pesos, 20 pesos, and 50 pesos. The gold content ranges from 0.45 troy ounces for 1 Peso to 1.20 troy ounces for 50 pesos.
