The gold dollar was a United States coin made up of 90% pure gold during the years 1849 to 1889. It was the smallest denomination of gold currency ever produced in the US. Originally there were no plans for a gold dollar coin, but in the late 1840s after two gold rushes, Congress wanted to expand the use of gold in the country’s currency. Authorized by the Act of March 3, 1849, the Liberty Head design soon began circulating.
