Double Eagle

The double eagle was first minted in 1849 when the mint produced two pieces in proof. The first being in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and the second sold as part of then Treasury Secretary William M. Meredith's estate. As far as we know the present location of this coin remains unknown. In 1850 regular production began and continued until 1933. It as given the name "Double Eagle" since this $20 gold piece had twice the value of the $10 eagle.
