Since 1852 Australia has been issuing gold coins and for many years produced British gold sovereigns from its branch mints in Sydney and Melbourne. In 1986, it introduced bullion gold coins known as the Kangaroo. Australia's gold series of bullion coins had two unique features: a 'two-tone' frosted design effect, and individual hard plastic encapsulation of each coin.
For a standard-price bullion coin, these features were unheard of, and positioned it as a coin offering a lot of value for a standard bullion price. Originally, on the reverse, these coins pictured a famous Australian gold nugget but was changed to the more familiar Kangaroo in 1989.

Australian gold coins come in different gross weight and sizes. There are currently 7 models for the Australia Gold Coin and they are as follows: 1/10 ounce, 1/20 ounce, ½ ounce, 1 ounce, 2 ounces, 10 ounces, and 1 kilogram coins.
